Hamlet Summary Act l & ll
Act 1 scene 1
Marcellus , Bernardo , and Horatio were stay in guard one night. Bernardo and Marcellus were telling Horatio about the apparition that visits them while they stand gaurd. Horatio didn’t believe what they were saying so Bernardo starts to tell him how they encountered two knights ago that’s when the ghost walked in Horatio starts to speak to it questioning it why it’s appears before them and what was it’s purpose it didn’t speak it just disappeared. They noticed that it looked a lot like that previous king, he was wearing the same armor he had used in battle. They decided to tell Hamlet about the appearance of what seemed to be his father
Act 1 Scene 2
King Claudius who is the brother of the passed king and uncle of hamlet has taken over the throne and had also married Queen Gertrude the wife of the passed king and mother of Hamlet. They had just been and finished attending the funeral of the king. Leartes had a request for the king and wish be allowed to return to France. Since he had attended King Claudius's Coronation he assumed they his duties are done and he should return back. King Claudius had accepted his request and allowed him and wished him the best of luck. After this Hamlet had also asked if he could head out to his own journey at Wittenburg but Claudius denied it for his head was always in the clouds and he must stay for the respect of his father. Not only his uncle wished him to stay but so did his mother. Hamlet was pretty pissed at the fact that they wouldn't let him out he would rant to himself about his uncle how he was lesser than his father and his mother was no better. She was a whore for taking marriage with his uncle for it only took her less than a month for her to get over his father's death. During his rant Horatio , Marcellus, and Bernardo approach Hamlet to tell him about the Spirit they have seen and how they think that spirit could be his father. Hamlet thought they were saying nonsense but when they point out that it's been two nights already that this spirit comes and goes right around midnight while they are guarding Hamlet decided to see it for himself. But he had them three that were to not say a word about what they have seen that he wants to see it for himself.
Act 1 Scene 3
Laertes is about ready to depart to France. He talks to his sister Ophelia before heading out and he mentions hamlet. He knows hamlet has been approaching her and telling her he is into to her and her brother isn't very fond of the idea. He tells her to beware and be careful of his actions that he his over his head and who knows how his mental state is now that his father had passed. although hamlet claims to love Ophelia she shouldn't fall for it so easy laertes tells his sister to stay on her toes. while they were having this conversation their father walked in telling laertes if he doesn't hurry he'l miss his sail so laertes says farewell to both of the and tells his sister to keep in mind what he had told her and to be careful. Ophelia's father polonuis than asks her what laertes had told her that he has the right to know. She told him it had to do with hamlet and her father orders her to tell him she tells him about hamlet revealing his love for her. her father wasn't so pleased and asked her if she believed in what hamlet had told her but she wasn't so sure whether to believe or not. polonius then tells her to not for she is to keep herself sacred and she needs to give herself respect and not let some sweetened words blind her cause if she does she will make her father look like a fool.
Act 1 Scene 4
it's midnight and Hamlet, Horatio, And marcellus meet at the guard post, hamlet wanted to see this spirit that horatio and marcellus claim to be his father. Horatio was asking about the armor the ghost had on and asked if it was some sort of custom and hamlet was explaining to him that they would wear it during battle and how his father would go into war drink and that other places knew them as drunks because if the king drank then all the the soldiers would. He was explaining that his father was a good man that’s when the ghost appeared on them. Hamlet starts to talk to it introducing himself and ordering it if it was his father for it to speak. Hamlet starts to rant about why must this ghost torment him like the way he does why must he look like his father and then ghost suddenly speaks and the only word it uses was “Hamlet”. All the men notice that the ghost only calls for hamlet horatio had told hamlet that it was, so hamlet doesn't try communicating he decides to go follow the ghost but horatio and marcellus didn't think he should for the ghost could be plotting something like getting into his head and manipulating him to jump off the cliff. Hamlet disagrees he doesn't think this ghost could possibly be able to do that and he thinks he has to if this ghost is presumed to be his father and it is calling his name only he must go.
Act 1 Scene 5
hamlet had followed the ghost spoke to it saying he wont go any further and he need it to speak the ghost tells him that his hour is almost over and from the description i can only assume to be is hell because he says he will go to sulfurous and tormenting flames. but the ghost tells hamlet to not give it pity he needed to tell him something important and he does not have much time to do so. the ghost starts to tell him about revenge and his death was involved in it that he was for sure the spirit of his father and what he was about to tell hamlet is something crazy and beyond belief it will have shocked. he goes on tell him how murder was played. He explains that he was asleep in his bed when someone had snuck into his chamber and poisoned him from his ear and that someone now wears the crown. hearing this hamlet automatically knew who his father was talking about it was uncle who had poisoned his father . his father goes on, not only did he poison his father but as well as his mother not with chemicals but with his word and his gift . his father couldn't believe how easy it was for her to fall for such easy tricks and how she got over the fact that he has passed, even after all the love and respect he has shown her. He goes saying that one day whatever she has done will catch up to her and it will only be her fault. he goes on to say goodbye to hamlet because the sunrise was starting to show he tells hamlet to remember him and his words to leave his mother to heaven but says nothing about the uncle and disappears. hamlet stands there alone trying to take in what his father had just told him he couldn't believe his father was murdered and here he thought he passed naturally, so he swore revenge on his uncle. Hamlet could hear Horatio and Marcellus calling for him Hamlet calls back to let him know where he is, Horatio and Marcellus find him and ask what had happened and what had the ghost told him. Hamlet refuses to tell them what the spirit of his father had told him because they will say something about to someone in the kingdom and Hamlet doesn't want anyone to know. They both swear they wouldn't so hamlet makes them swear it to heaven that they wouldn't, they swear. Hamlet starts by telling them that there is a villain, a bad man in the kingdom. Hamlet then excuses himself but he asks for a favor from both Horatio and Marcellus, that they never let anyone know or hear about what had happened that knight. Both agree and swear that they will not. Hamlet make them swear upon his sword and they swore. Hamlet tells Horatio and Marcellus they should go in together but without a word of what they had seen.
Act 2 Scene 1
Lord Polonius and Reynaldo are together , Lord Polonius gives Reynaldo money and asks to give a note to give to his son Laertes. Polonius tells him once he gets there to make note of how he is behaving himself. Polonius wants to know what his son had been up to, who he hangs out with, what he spends his money on, where they live, and if somebody ask what is Reynaldo to Laertes he is to tell them that he knows his father and his friends.
